Jo Harrison has always had a love of animals and was fortunate to spend her childhood on a farm. On leaving school she trained as a veterinary nurse at Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT) whilst working for Weymouth Road Veterinary Clinic. On a visit to England, Jo added grooming to her veterinary skills, alongside a woman that groomed dogs as part of her veterinary clinic.
After returning home again, Jo worked for six years at Franklin Veterinary Referral Centre in Auckland as the senior surgical specialist nurse.
The new PJs Pooches' business was growing quickly through word of mouth so, in 2009 they erected a purpose-built salon for dogs and cats, equipped with a deluxe hydrobath, and employed another adept hand to assist with bathing and drying the dogs. This kept the dogs out of the family bathtub and enabled Jo to take on additional clients. The business continues to grow exponentially and so Jo's next move is to share a portion of the tobacco shed with PJs Canvas, and add another bath to the suite along with more grooming stations. The move will also give her more space to display the carefully selected products she offers, alongside her own line of doggie beds and jerseys.
Jo's clients, travelling from all over the Nelson and Tasman area, respond to her easy communication style with them, but more importantly her ability to calm the nerves of dogs for whom grooming has not been done before, or who are simply nervous to be touched, sometimes by anyone at all. She prides herself on offering the groom her client wants, and is skilled at creating a breed-specific look to award-winning levels, but is also happy to groom the pet to the owner's desired look, appropriate for the breed or not.
Please visit our Testimonials page to see what some of her clients have to say, and our Rates and Services page will give you all the information you need to schedule your pet's next visit to the salon. Jo also created the Grooming@Home page to assist pet owners of new puppies, and in between grooming visits.
